Democracy Camp is the typical entry point into YVote’s structured programs. This paid six-week summer experience helps New York City high school students understand civic systems, explore issues affecting their communities, and begin developing the confidence to take meaningful action.

Build the Foundation to Participate and Lead

Civic Knowledge

Develop a stronger understanding of democracy, government, civic participation, and systems of power.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

No Previous Civic Experience Is Required.

Democracy Camp welcomes New York City high school students with different levels of civic knowledge and experience. Students should be curious, open to learning with others, and able to commit to the six-week program.

Students must apply to and be accepted into the New York City Summer Youth Employment Program before applying to YVote’s Democracy Camp.

Application Process

Acceptance into SYEP makes a student eligible to apply to Democracy Camp. It does not guarantee acceptance into YVote’s program.

Who Can Apply?

New York City high school students who have applied to and been accepted into SYEP and meet the current YVote program requirements.

 

Is the Program Free?

Yes. There is no cost to participate.

 

Is the Program Paid?

Yes. Democracy Camp is a paid summer opportunity offered in partnership with DYCD/SYEP.

 

When and Where Does the Program Take Place?

Current dates, daily hours, and location will be included in the application.

 

What Can I Do After Democracy Camp?

Participants can continue through Changemakers Institute and may later become eligible for Facilitator Training, Media Labs, and other leadership opportunities.

Need Help Applying to SYEP?

YVote will offer information sessions and application-preparation support for students and families who need assistance understanding or completing the SYEP process.
